Overview
Weekly 8-form Tai Chi sessions, plus an introduction to Seasonal Dynamic Meditation, to experience the calming power of Tai Chi.
Join our free weekly Eight-Form Tai Chi sessions, hosted by the OU Online Confucius Institute. Following enthusiastic feedback from previous participants who reported feeling more relaxed, balanced, and flexible, we are delighted to offer another round of 8-week series.
Dates: 15th June – 3rd August 2026
Time: 13:30–14:10 (UK time).
Format: Online | Open to staff, students, and the public
Led by an experienced instructor, YU Feixia, this course introduces the Eight-Form Tai Chi (八式太极拳) - a simple yet powerful sequence combining gentle movement, breathing, and mindful awareness. Suitable for beginners as well as for those wishing to deepen their practice, the eight sessions build gradually to help you develop confidence, balance, and inner calm.
Each session includes an optional 10-minute introduction to seasonal Daoyin (导引) exercises, inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine and Daoist practices. These movements align your body’s energy (Qi) with natural rhythms to support wellbeing. You are free to leave after the first 30 minutes’ Tai Chi practice.
What you will gain:
A complete 8-movement Tai Chi routine for daily practice
Improved balance, posture, relaxation, and focus
Eight seasonal Daoyin movements for energy alignment
An introduction to key Chinese health concepts (Qi, Yin–Yang)
Supporting materials for home practice
A welcoming and supportive learning community
Tai Chi is widely recognised for its benefits in improving balance (as shown in a recent BBC What’s up docs podcast) and overall wellbeing. We warmly invite you to join us and experience its lasting effects.

OCI Talk - Between Moon and Sun: Discovering China’s Seasonal Way of Time
Friday, September 25, 2026
1 PM - 2 PM GMT+1, online
Overview
An introduction to the ancient Chinese way of understanding time through the changing positions of the sun in relation to the earth.
What does the moon have to do with the sun?
On the Mid‑Autumn Festival, a time traditionally guided by the moon, we are delighted to welcome our guest speaker Yu Feixia, Honorary Principal Lecturer at the University of Lancashire, who will introduce an ancient Chinese way of understanding time through the changing positions of the sun in relation to the earth.
She will offer an introduction to the Twenty‑Four Solar Terms, a traditional Chinese system developed through close observation of subtle shifts in climate, daylight, plant life, and human activity across the year. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, this system has long helped people attune everyday life such as food, festivals, health, and work, to the rhythms of the natural world.
As a qualified Qigong trainer, Feixia will also demonstrate a few key Daoyin movements to show how different movements are traditionally associated with different seasons, and how moving in harmony with seasonal change is believed to bring the greatest benefit.
